the philosophy of light
Light has the power to transform user experience and promote ecology. Through contrast and layering, light creates hierarchy and clarity, simplifying the visual landscape and amplifying interesting parts of the world around us. An intelligent use of daylight connects us to the outdoors and can drive sustainability.
I have experience in exterior and interior lighting design, daylighting analysis, and electrical systems engineering. I connect the art and science of light in my work to create healthy and inspiring places. |
PARAMETRICALLY Designed Pendant Fixtures
In these four custom pendant light fixture designs, I created an algorithm to generate surface patterns that are thematically and visually distinctive. The organic branching and coral-like patterns invite the natural world inside through subtle abstraction. The woven wicker like design speaks to current interior design trends and helps to softly and uniformly diffuse light. The generative, parametric design script created here is highly flexible and can be used for mass customization to meet distinct client needs at low cost.

Bradley Green Alley - Urban Outdoor Lighting Proposal
In this unique urban renewal project I informed the schematic design principles that balance the needs of a diverse group of stakeholders. Play, performance, relaxation, safety, and compliance were brought together to effectively bridge an affordable housing project and strip mall. The project was directed by the lighting and infrastructure teams at Arup that created sustainable water reclamation and inviting public space on the site.

Airport Metro Connector
In July of 2018 I worked with Arup to design the interior of the Grimshaw designed Airport Metro Connector. This project serves a critical role in connecting LAX to the public transit services serving the LA metro area. I used lighting analysis software to determine the fixtures, positioning, and layers of light appropriate for the delicate and undulating architectural form while ensuring code compliance.

San Francisco School of the Arts - Daylighting Analysis
When San Francisco Public Schools saw increasing demand for arts education, they turned to Arup lighting engineers and expert architects to renovate a classical icon into an advanced education facility. The renovation will take the Ruth Asawa San Francisco School of the Arts and add a new facility addition and modifications to the facade that enhance the energy performance of the building and ensure a positive occupant experience. For this project I performed a climate analysis and solar availability study.

Spinning CHANDELIER Vancouver - Light Art Installation
Arup lighting engineers were commissioned to bring this public art piece to life. As an engineering consultant on the project, I designed a prototype for the 1m+ tall bulbs installed on this chandelier. This iconic lighting fixture has tunable lighting elements allowing the CCT of the chandelier to match the surrounding daylit environment. I proposed a dual sided LED tape filament design that captured the classic style of the Edison bulb while avoiding glare and managing heat.
